Through its work, LSNJ strives to ensure substantive and procedural justice for people living in poverty. Legal Services of the NJ website SCLS provides free legal assistance in various civil cases. SCLS does not provide legal assistance in criminal matters or fees. To obtain legal assistance in a criminal case, please contact the public defender`s office in your county. For legal assistance in a fee-based matter, please call the Lawyer Placement Service at 1-800-868-2284. The fee for the lawyer referral service can be up to fifty dollars ($50.00) for 30 minutes. Since 2020, demand for our services has exploded, demonstrating the critical need for civilian representation in every city and community in North Carolina. Before we can help you, we need to find out if you are eligible for our office`s services. Due to limited resources, our staff is not able to assist you with all legal issues. If you have a civil law problem but can`t afford to hire a private lawyer, you can still access the legal system through your local legal advice and legal aid organization, which provides free or low-cost legal services to low-income people. All legal claims have deadlines. Some civil rights violations may require you to file a complaint or seek options with a government agency before you can take legal action. If you fail to comply with the deadlines or notice obligations, you may be legally prevented from bringing your claim to court. Contacting LDF for legal assistance does not stop these deadlines or eliminate the need to submit notifications. If you have an urgent need or need to meet a deadline, contact a private attorney, your local public defender, or your state`s bar association. DO NOT wait for a response from LDF.
