To bring joy to global audiences, we need truly global content that doesn`t always come from Hollywood. For India, our content legal team is looking for an intellectual property lawyer to handle various legal issues arising from the creation and streaming of Netflix original shows and movies in India. In this position, working out of Mumbai, you will report to the Director – Intellectual Property, Content Litigation and Grievances (India) on matters related to intellectual property in the film and television industry, including rights acquisition, copyright issues, chain of title releases, title releases and registrations, content production outputs, intellectual property enforcement, defense of intellectual property claims, moral legal issues and defamation claims. This role will work closely with several internal teams to help our content team tell great stories. As an IP advisor, your experience and expertise in entertainment and media will enable you to work in any situation that may arise in relation to television or film production in India. You won`t be surprised by the last-minute surprises that inevitably occur when developing, filming or marketing a film, series or documentary. You`ll skillfully navigate these situations and enable your colleagues to achieve their creative and business goals. You understand the dynamics between showrunners, executive producers, executive producers, finance, post-production, marketing and creative, and know when and how to assemble the right teams for IP issues. You can assess risks with incomplete information and have the confidence to make quick decisions.

Requirements • 9+ years of professional experience as an in-house lawyer in the Indian media and entertainment industry or as a consultant in a media and entertainment law firm. • Meticulous understanding of media and entertainment laws, intellectual property law, civil and criminal law, information technology law and constitutional law. • Experience in producing films and/or television series, including managing production staff and negotiating and drafting legal documents such as licensing agreements, objections and release forms for various production documents. • Good knowledge of the entertainment and filmed production process.

• Many years of experience in handling complex rights transactions for the acquisition/licensing of book rights, underlying copyrighted works rights and content rights. • Experience in managing large-scale workflows and collaborating vertically independently. • Excellent communication skills and a penchant for creative and innovative thinking. • Ability to proactively, independently and reliably work on multiple projects under tight deadlines in a rapidly changing environment and interact with production houses, cross-functional departments and suppliers. • Highly collaborative and responds positively to pressure, change and new ideas. Curious and eager to tackle things off the field. • A great leader who had previously worked with a high-performing team. • Sense of humor. Responsibilities • Identify legal and intellectual property risks in our content and help our content team navigate them. • Work with content and business and legal teams to acquire and develop intellectual property, and then manage it through production and distribution.

• Cooperation with Business & Legal Affairs teams to advise on complex law structures in contracts. • Analyze trademark authorizations, including cross-border searches in collaboration with the trademark team. • Manage claims related to intellectual property and music in the pre-litigation phase. • Work with litigation, public policy and regulatory teams on litigation and regulatory work related to intellectual property issues. • Respond quickly to production exit issues and questions from production houses and creative teams. • Conducts a chain of title review for complex rights acquisitions and provides concise and pragmatic analysis. • Negotiate and draft license agreements, release forms and letters of objection, etc. for a variety of production equipment. • Work with the marketing legal team to advise on intellectual property issues in marketing and advertising content.
